Why natural perfume is the last bastion of clean beauty The confusing world of clean fragrance
Everyday staples our beauty writer returns to every time
By Megan Prowd
Having struggled with breakouts and skin irritation for my whole life, I discovered years ago a simplified routine of just a few natural, star products is what my skin needs. And while I still get drawn the sheen of cult beauty products, I know in my heart of hearts natural, simple and paired back is better for me, and my skin.
In more recent times there has been a seismic shift in the beauty industry whereby the traditional cult favourites that we have become so familiar with are slowly on their way out, as we shed the nasties of traditional brands, and fill our everyday routines with a new generation of clean, green and low-tox alternatives – which are so good for your skin and the earth, that you won’t even miss your old faithfuls.
Having tried and tested hundreds, and probably thousands of natural products on my quest for the holy grail of natural beauty products that rival their mainstream counterparts, I’ve compiled my all-time favourite natural beauty products for your glowy skin pleasure.
Touted as an all-round cheek colour, lip tint and highlighter, cult natural beauty brand RMS has really hit the nail on the head with their little pots of multi-tasking colour. With a creamy consistency, and all-day staying power, this natural cream blush is so good it won’t have you reaching for touch-ups throughout the day. I love the soft pink hued Demure, which suits most skin tones and is equally perfect for adding a tiny hint of colour and is also buildable for night-time looks. The key ingredient in all RMS products is Wild Buriti Oil, a nutrient-dense and antioxidant rich oil that is native to Brazil and boasts high levels of vitamin A and a laundry-list of skin benefits. Ultra-portable and versatile, you won’t want to leave the house without one of these stashed in your bag.
Best for: multitasking beauty
I tried this high-powered serum twinset on a skin fasting experiment and have loved it ever since. Biologi’s philosophy of less-is-more means you only really need to invest in minimal products, rather than layering multiple serums and creams that are likely to weigh down the skin and result in more product wastage than our wallets can handle.
I am oh-so onboard with the ultra-clean and high concentration serums, as well as the pared back philosophy which allows you to ditch multi-step routines – using less is key to reducing packaging and product waste after all! This full treatment system does wonders for our skin, with the potent Bqk Morning Serum and Evening Serum which are made up of 100 per cent active organic ingredients working against nasty pigmentation, redness, dullness and UV damage. Simplicity is key here, use these powerful serums with a basic routine of cleanser, serum and sunscreen and reap the rewards of happy and even-toned skin.
Best for: pigmentation
For bronzed, warm summery skin through even the coldest months, I love a little sweep of this talc-free, creamy powder bronzer. The creamy consistency is thanks to the shea butter and meadowfoam oil formula, and the result is pleasingly not chalky for a powder bronzer. Blend this into skin at any time of the year, for a perfectly natural and buildable glow, without the usual sparkly undertones of traditional bronzers.
Best for: winter skin
Some people swear by laser, others love a good peel, but for me, there is no better skin brightening and clearing ingredient than lactic acid, and my very favourite beauty product of the bunch is this overnight treatment cream serum by Sunday Riley. Gentle and yet incredibly good at buffing away dead skin and even pigmentation, it leaves clear and glowy skin in its wake, and my sensitive skin tolerates this every other evening (alternated with a retinol alternative). This is in serious can’t-live-without territory.
Best for: even skin tone
Cruelty-free and made in Australia, this chemical-free formulation doubles as a hydrator, and when time is short (always) there’s nothing that makes us happier than multitasking beauty products. With its high concentration of hyaluronic acid, and natural oils like jojoba, avocado and argan oil, and Kakadu plum, it keeps skin happily hydrated and glowing, while providing just enough coverage to hide any sins. The ingredient blend works to plump up dehydrated skin, reduce breakouts and inflammation.
Best for: dry skin
Perfectly lightweight and sheer enough for no-makeup makeup days, the first thing to love about this favourite liquid mineral foundation from the extensive Mukti range, is the luxurious whipped-cream texture and subtly floral-scented formula. Once on, it also smooths out skin tone and hides imperfections, while not disguising your natural skin tone. The formula of potent anti-ageing ingredients like Kakadu plum and rosehip oil means it’s as good for your skin as it feels, and although a little light on the SPF, this tinted moisturiser is perfect for any occasion (just don’t forget to layer your SPF50 over the top). We especially love the recyclable glass dispensing bottle.
Best for: sensitive skin
Yes, it’s luxe, long-lasting and natural enough to wear at any time of day, but in terms of natural beauty it’s the fine line fighting goodness of this buttery lip colour that sets this product above the rest, and really keeps us coming back for more. With a high-concentration of cacao butter and omega-rich castor oil, it does double duty to hydrate and plump lips, while working to fight the signs of ageing. It’s also vegan and cruelty-free and comes in six natural and ultra-wearable shades that you won’t want to leave home without.
Best for: anti-ageing lip care
