Natural, active and hydrating serums for your best skin yet
By Megan Prowd
Although a relative newcomer to the beauty line-up, serums are the unsung heroes of the skincare world. More potent than a moisturiser, and with more efficiency than a mask, it’s little wonder they have become an everyday beauty essential. Serums are arguably the most important step in your skincare routine and shouldn’t be skipped. Done well, a good serum is a game changer, and as natural skincare and science increasingly become intertwined, some powerhouse toxin-free formulations are appearing.
Multi-tasking is name of this game and with this in mind, we delved into some of the best natural active serums available on the market. These are our current top three on high rotation.
Not technically a single serum, the Biologi Bqk Radiance Duo is a full treatment system, consisting of the Bqk Morning and Bqk Evening Serum. With a high concentration of naturally derived ingredients like native Kakadu Plum and pure Australian Quandong, this potent duo targets pigmentation, redness, dullness and skin ageing, while boosting radiance, preventing future UV damage and evening skin tone.
Biologi serums are unique in that they are made up of powerful 100 per cent active organic ingredients, and are also vegan, fragrance and cruelty-free and Australian made from local ingredients. They are also designed to be used in isolation, meaning you can ditch the moisturisers, toners and other products in favour of the pared-back routine of cleanser, serum and sunscreen that Biologi recommends. That sort of simplicity is a win in our book.
This all-Australian brand is something of a revelation in the natural beauty world, and their best-selling serum is a true all-rounder that delivers results to the most sensitive of skins. With its concentration of only 100 per cent plant-based antioxidants, it is a delightfully fragrant serum that feels both lightweight and soothing on the skin. The Rescue and Recover Serum acts as a salve for irritated skin, providing a protective barrier while delivering active ingredients to nourish the skin. The gentle formula also promotes cellular repair, improves skin texture and provides a barrier to free-radical damage. Mukti Organics is also certified organic, vegan, fragrance and cruelty free.
Not to be confused with the animal-derived Squalene oil (often taken from shark-liver oil or other animal-origin sources)- squalane oil is a plant-derived version of the naturally occurring, skin-hydrating emollient that delivers effective hydration to all skin types. When combined with the plant-derived retinol alternative Bakuchiol, in the Biossance Squalane + Phyto-Retinol Serum, this pleasantly rose-scented serum becomes a true multi-tasker, targeting hydration, skin ageing and delivering all-important retinol to ageing skins that struggle with irritation from retinol use.
