From floaty linen frocks to dramatic floor-length dresses, here’s our pick for the festive season and beyond
We love party season – it’s a time to celebrate with family, friends and colleagues, and to reflect on the year that was. However, it can also be a time of fast-fashion consumption. Finding the right outfit for a particular event can result in a last minute dash to the shops and before you know it you’ve bought a whole new outfit that is destined to only be worn once. If this is you (it’s been us too!), we’re here to show you sustainable fashion can always be a part of your outfit consideration, even during this hectic time of year. We’ve enlisted Biome store’s head of sustainable fashion Leah Musch to share her favourite ethical and sustainable party dresses that are multi-functional, timeless and beautiful.
“This emerald green oversized shirt dress is made from the softest 100 per cent baltic linen. The drop waist makes it the ideal comfortable staple to have in your wardrobe, and can easily be belted to totally transform its shape,’’ says Leah. “ Both the fabric and the dress have been handmade in Poland. Layer it over a basic tee and jeans in the colder months. Extremely versatile, undeniably soft, a fashion minimalist’s dream dress.’’
Best for; comfort
If you aren’t already charmed by the timeless mustard colour, you’ll be won over by the Drawstring Dress’ surprising and welcome softness.
“This dress has been handmade in Adelaide using 100 per cent Hemp Linen, which is renowned for its natural thermo-regulating abilities that keep you cool in summer and warm in winter,’’ Leah says.
“Hemp is also one of the most durable and long-lasting natural fibres, so this dress will see you receiving compliments for many party seasons to come.’’
Best for; lunches and day time soirees
“This striped beauty by New Zealand ethical and sustainable fashion label, Kowtow is the ultimate party dress. It’s made from a soft, lightweight 100 per cent certified fair-trade organic cotton poplin.
“Nothing needs to be added to this beauty, it’s a knockout, just the way it is. Spin on the dance floor and watch it expand,’’ says Leah.
Best for; a dramatic entrance
“There is one word that best describes this Australian made number, and that’s “sultry,’’” says Leah.
Giving off some serious Grecian goddess vibes, the Decade dress is the ultimate multitasker.
“Featuring low sides and back, it’s made from superfine organic cotton and drapes beautifully to any body shape. Throw it over your swimsuit for an easy beach look or pop on some heels to own the dance floor.’’
Best for; beach to bar
“This simple V-neck dress is made from soft 100 per cent Baltic linen, and comes in a gorgeous, rich mauve colour. It’s perfect for summer beach parties and backyard barbecues,’’ says Leah.
“It would look stunning paired with a brown or tan belt and your favourite summer sandals, or leave it loose and flowing for a more casual option. Subtle splits in the side hemline make it easy to move.”
Best for; barbecues
