This is not a drill! We’ve just uncovered the tees that are better for you and the planet.
Whether it’s under a blazer or paired with your favourite jeans, the humble t-shirt is one of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe. And the only thing more satisfying than finding the perfect fit is knowing its creation had a positive impact on the people who made it, and the planet. Here we’ve rounded up our favourite brands making a mighty good case for eco fashion.
Freeset is a charity that campaigns for women trapped in bonded labour and human trafficking. So when you buy a t-shirt (or bag) you’re helping provide more than 250 women with a fair wage. GOTS certified, T-shirts are custom made, with a two week lead time and are available in men’s, womens or unisex (our fave).
Bon is unapologetic about its philosophy of ‘unf**kupable’ wardrobe staples that have been sustainably made to last using Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) cotton. French for ‘good’, Bon definitely has a certain je ne sais quoi about its pieces; lots of Breton stripes, grey marle and of course, crisp white and black.
Made in Melbourne, local production using 100 per cent organic cotton is at the heart of Organic Crew. Their t-shirt range is a mix of logo styles and basics that are versatile, luxe-looking and come in under $100. They’ve recently opened a concept store in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern, and are definitely ones to keep and eye on.
Bassike has been making some of the coolest tees around for more than a decade. All from organic cotton and all produced sustainably in Australia. Whether it’s an updated colour or a delicate design tweak, these guys always offer something new each season. Super soft with plenty of cool factor, they’re worth every cent.
Social responsibility and transparency go hand-in-hand with classic design at this UK-based company that only uses GOTS certified cotton in its designs. It also offers a Tailor Your Tee service so you’re guaranteed a perfect fit every time.
Empowering women and sustainable employment are at the forefront of Cloth & Co, who sources over 70 per cent of their products from Women’s Cooperatives, Fair Trade businesses and self help groups across India and Nepal. Their t-shirts are designed in Australia then made from organic cotton by a small women’s stitching unit in Southern India. They look great with their hand loomed pom-pom scarf.
